Court of Common Pleas vs MDJ
The Court of Common Pleas is the main trial court. It hears civil and criminal matters that are not limited to a minor court, family cases, Orphans' Court matters, and lower-court cases that move up or are appealed. Magisterial District Courts are lower courts. They handle driving violations, non-traffic violations, landlord-tenant disputes, small claims, and criminal offenses that may later be bound over to Common Pleas.

McKean County Court Divisions

McKean County Courthouse History
McKean County's courthouse history is unusually strong in the official source material. The current courthouse is the fourth courthouse on the site. The first courthouse was completed in 1826, and the second in 1851. Both were designed and built by Smethport native Solomon Sartwell. The second courthouse became too small after the Bradford oil boom, when the county population rose from under 10,000 in 1874 to more than 45,000 in 1881.
The third courthouse was completed in 1881 at a cost of $80,000 and designed by Buffalo architect Milton Earl Beebe. It burned on February 12, 1940, with flames reported as high as 130 feet while fire companies from Smethport, Kane, Mount Jewett, Eldred, and Port Allegany responded. The fourth courthouse was dedicated June 14, 1942 on the same site. Local history also frames the courthouse between Main and King Streets, and between State and Church Streets, as civic symbolism.
